Fri, February 6, 2004 - 4:56 PMI'm a SQA Engineer in Santa Cruz, CA. I'm interested in moving toward project management some time in the future. I'm here to find out what the PMs talk about when they don't think QA is listening. Oh wait... there goes my cover ;-) -

Re: Pretty inactive board
Wed, February 11, 2004 - 8:09 PMWell, Gobo, I am finding out that IT Project Management is an ever-shrinking market. Many companies are looking for what they call PM's but what they really want are developers who can also manage - with more of an emphasis on development. It's kind of like what some of the larger manufacturers used to do when they hired machinists but called them tool makers. Many of those people could not build a tool at all, but they could turn out good tool components. Many of the people that get hired these days at Project Managers are great at writing code, but are lacking when it comes to managing the entire process. Yet, companies insist they want to hire a PM.
I realise I sound bitter, but I am frustrated. After getting downsized out of PM and trying to get back in for a while now, I am indeed....frustrated.
Any other PMs here care to add to my viewpoint on the current state of IT Project Management?
