I joined early this year/late last year and signed up for single interest groups within PMI and there's one for the SF Bay area (and whichever region you live in)...for the SF Sig they have their own website, with job listings and plus I can also upload my resume. I've gotten good calls through them and plus the rates they offer is higher than going through monster or dice...

Also, PMI's great if you're doing research...

We are getting more picky about projects we accept in the
IT Department as we are getting tighter with resources.
My boss wants to push each department / group to justify
their project with an ROI to determine where resources are
best spent.

Great idea but... none of these folks really know much
about doing an ROI and in most cases the approach will
be different depending on the project. It's not a cookie
cutter thing. I may end up being the person to see to
come up with a number, so I started looking for a class
to see if I could pick up some ideas. Not that I can't
wing it, but structure never hurts.

ESI doesn't offer such a class (this may be the first
confirmation that the task is impractical).

Where else do you do for Project Management classes?
Ever heard of such a class?

Why? I think I would like the structure (a better defined, repeatable process) and I'd like working on projects I can see and touch. As a woman I think dealing with the "old boy network" in the construction industry will be a big challenge but I'm not sure if that should be a show stopper.

Thoughts? Comments? Experiences moving to a new industry where your PM talents eased the transition?

I have managed 2 development projects and only 1 of them was actually completed. It was about 10 years ago and we did a 'live' inventory tracking system using MS Access for a manufacturing company. The other was just a couple of years ago - developing a sales/CRM/Quoting package for a local equipment dealer. Their business went south and, of course, the new development project was cancelled. I had already done all the planning and planned integration with 2 packaged software products and was designing the sales product that we were going to develop internally when the project was cancelled as was my employment. :)

I'll post some other big projects I've worked on, but what about the rest of you? What types of IT projects have you managed?
